Enhancing Immune Function Naturally

In simpler terms, the study looked at the effects of certain materials that emit electromagnetic waves in the far infrared region (wavelength 4-14 microns) on human immune cells. These materials include tourmaline (a type of granite stone), common granite stone, ceramic disks, hot spring water, and human palm energy known as "Kikoh" in Japan and China.

The researchers found that these materials had positive effects on the activity of certain immune cells called leukocytes. Specifically, they observed increases in intracellular calcium ion concentration, phagocytosis (the process of engulfing foreign particles by immune cells), and the production of reactive oxygen species in neutrophils (a type of white blood cell). They also found that the materials enhanced the ability of lymphocytes (another type of white blood cell) to respond to certain stimuli.

Interestingly, exposure to tourmaline and the palm of individuals who practice "Kikoh" healing also increased the ability of neutrophils to move toward chemical signals (chemotactic activity). Despite the increase in reactive oxygen species produced by neutrophils, the materials actually inhibited the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids, suggesting a protective effect against oxidative damage.

Overall, the study suggests that materials emitting electromagnetic radiation in the far infrared range may have the potential to enhance immune cell functions without causing oxidative injury. These materials are commonly used in Japan for various purposes, including cosmetics, therapy, and preservation.
